Welcome Product!
FINALLY a printer that has changes/additions that are welcome, at least to this person who does a boatload of printing, especially photos. 1st: this unit, XP 820, is NOT a space hog. 2nd: it's NOT an ink pig! 3rd: it was a BREEZE to install! 4th: LOVE the 2 paper trays. 5th: the change that won me over: a document tray that AUTOMATICALLY extends to print, and RETRACTS when done!! GREAT FEATURE!! Plus, it's got a lot of other welcome user friendly features! As a photographer, my demands for quality photo prints are very high. The XP 820 meets those parameters and more. Of all the models of other brands we've tried, the XP 820 gets the Gold! Nice to know somebody is listening to what the customers would like in a printer. EPSON,...you've got a winner with this unit!

eats up paper
it's super hungry on ink and paper. Could never get it to print properly because all it does is eat up paper. You look at it wrong and it'll jam. Even when there's no paper jam, it'll say paper jam. If one thing is wrong with it (i.e. ink too low for 1 color), it won't print even in b/w. If the scanner is broken, the printer will not work. Good luck with this if you buy it. This is the 2nd Epson printer we bought and they both broke with paper jams, ink smears.

    Consistently EXCELLENT performance
Why did I ever depart from the Epson Brand?! After years of fiddling with my old finicky printer, I finally returned to Epson. I purchased the Epson XP-820 even though some reviewers stated that it is "more complicated than it needs to be"... I am a professional photographer/image maker and IF I were intending to use my printer for client photos, I would NOT select this model... go to the next level if you want your prints to represent your professional work. I use this printer for glossy inserts and promotional materials including DVD case inserts. I select only Epson printer photo paper for the best results. The included printer ink cartridges lasted a nice long time, BUT I replaced them with the Epson XL cartridges for longer life in the printer. Installation was very easy and I have wirelessly connected the printer to three computers all using Windows 7 pro 64 bit. Though I do not routinely use the disc printer function, I did test it out on a 053388 Tuffcoat glossy DVD-R and did not notice any difference in print image quality when compared to my Primera DVD Printer... very satisfactory there if you are just doing a few discs as a gift or for your own use... otherwise quite slow. I found the touch screen interface to be very intuitive and easy to get used to. After you have printed a job, you will need to "touch" the eject button for the tray to retract, this allows the printer to go to sleep and close itself up. Fun side note... my Nephew often visits my studio... I told him to go stand by the printer (which was closed up and dark in the sleep mode)... I sent a print job and watched him light up with amazement as the unit lit up, elevated its control panel and extended the paper guide... lots of amazing moving parts. It's just as much fun to watch the unit close itself up. Maybe that is what some are calling "complicated"? Photo prints load from the rear and I am VERY happy with the photo quality and ink use. I have had no interface problems and even thick stock is nicely handled. I did use some recycled, relatively thin printer paper... during double sided printing, it did jam once... however, the jam was easy to clear and the printer was back online for the remainder of the project. It takes up little space and you do need clearance behind the unit to allow for those rear feed jobs. For photos, it cycles through some preparations and then you add the photo paper when prompted. No hiccups... no problems with the print spooler... easy interface... clear instructions and consistent output quality. YES I would definitely recommend it to a friend... you also have the option of viewing printer ink levels when the unit is printing, allowing plenty of time to re-order replacement inks. I absolutely recommend that you spend the extra and get the XL rated inks from Epson... it's not "better" ink, but more of it for sure!

Not what I thought it would be...
I bought this printer end of January this year, to replace an older printer. I have used this printer only two months. I am a small, small business and only print 20-25 pages a week. I have had to replace the black ink cartridge 4 times since middle of March. And the first two weeks of March I was not even in office. The color cartridges have all been replaced at least once in that time. I understand there were starter cartridges at purchase time, BUT FOUR extra large black cartridges??!! Ridiculous! I hate the printer and believe it to be an ink sucker and it did not state this in market materials. I am very disappointed and will not buy any other Epson products.

    INK GUZZLER
Initially, printer set up easily and made the wireless connection that I wanted. While going thru the features and familiarity I noticed the return tray feature wouldn't work properly and always had to restart after hitting button. To date I still have to close it up manually. After the first few days I lost wireless connectivity. Trying to reconnect was fruitless and ended up hard wiring so as to use it. In all these starts and restarts it consumed the original inks without even printing 5 pages. I had the foresight to have ordered replacement cartridges along with the printer, because I know that original cartridges are only half or less filled. After installing the new inks I reordered 2 sets of extra large capacity cartridges, because of the way this printer uses ink when it recharges every time it has to restart. I just replaced the first set of replacement cartridges today and haven't hardly printed 50 pages yet. The features are nice for this model...if you can get them to work when you need them. If I leave the printer on and in ready mode, every time I go to print, copy or scan something...just to use it...it gives a failed message and has to be restarted...eating up more ink and time. If you're in a hurry to get something done, it's disappointing when you have to go thru this almost every time, but I can live with that. It's the cost of all the ink that has to be replaced that's most disappointing. I've owned nothing but Epson printers for many years and this is the first one that has been a disappointment to me.

Great printer - love duplex & rear feed
The print and scan quality is great. Its compact size is fantastic. It's easy to use if you follow the panel instructions. (I've been using it for 3 months, but I haven't set up the fax yet.) My favorite features are: 2-sided printing: This feature was a must for me and while it doesn't handle 2-sided legal paper, the printer margins for letter paper are much smaller than other printers I've had. rear paper feed: This feature is wonderful for specialty paper and there is no need to reload the main tray for other low use paper types.

    Bad ink included
The ink cartridges that came in the box were not recognized by setup even tho we tried over and over, so tech support had to mail us new ones which worked perfectly. The printer paper drawers seem a little flimsy, so be very gentle with them. The wireless printing setup did not go smoothly, but we downloaded the product user guide and that contained the information that we needed to complete the wireless setup and now it works Great. The printer does a wonderful job on photos and text. Now that the pain of setup is done, we are very happy with this printer.

Not user friendly. To much to punch in every time you need to do something on it. Like to have never figured out how to scan something to the computer. Kept giving me error message that it was not connected to the computer when I have been printing from the computer. To hard to find where it is going to save the item and to many settings to adjust every time.

    dvd printing
just hooked this up but I can tell you that Epson does the best job and has the best software for designing and printing on cd and dvd's . I am replacing my old Epson that lasted a very long time. when I did need support ' Epson was very helpful. I purchased a nice canon printer from sams club' hooked it up and found the dvd printing software to be horrible , so I returned it. . its more like designing a hallmark card than a dvd cover using templates.and checking into other brands of printers found that none seem to have good thought out software for the job. epsons software is like a dvd setting on a table, you can design text, pictures headers or whatever and move them on to the dvd or off to the side like a table. that is very useful if you save your job, then next time you want to print the same say header but change a pic or a text box you just slide one over onto your dvd or slide something off. I print a lot of dvd and cds so this was important to me. and by the way its the same , just updated software that they have had right along. if you go to the Epson printer software download you can download the print cd software , install and check it out. hope this helps someone that likes to print on printable dcds.

    Glitchy setup on OSX 10.7.5
Glitchy setup on OSX 10.7.5. Loaded all choices. Simple USB connect to an iMac. Several error messages. Looks like driver didn't load or install? Ran EPSON Software Updater, and several files downloaded, but didn't install. Rebooted. That seemed to install the driver. Was then able to add the Epson printer to the printer list and make it the default. Seems to print OK.
