Interactive and Educational
My 7 y/o son really enjoyed this toy. It comes with an interactive pen and 2 books that contain math-related questions. Some of the categories are addition, telling time, statistics, counting money, and shapes. It kept my son interested and he enjoyed testing his knowledge with the various questions.

Math fun for 1st or 2nd graders
My 6 y.o. has enjoyed working on math with his new Hot Dots Grade 2 Math set. The stylus is easy for him to use and provides immediate feedback on how he is doing through the use of phrases, sounds, and lights. The following topics are covered in the two included booklets: Place Value, Numbers (expanded form practice, even vs odd), Patterns, Math Vocabulary (addend, difference, sum, fact family), Addition/Subtraction Facts, Length, Telling Time, Data & Statistics (graphs, charts), Geometry (shapes), Number Sentences, Algebra, Story Problems, Counting Money, Fractions, as well as a Challenge section that is a review of all the child has worked on in the two books. Whether at home or on the road, this is a good way for kids to pass a bit of time while learning something in the process.

    Great educational toy!
We are a Hot Dots loving family. Have used Hot Dots since kinder and they've been a helpful tool to reinforce what is learned in school. I have found that Hot Dots grade ____ is aligned with that grade levels curriculum and Hot Dots Math Grade 2 is no exception. Hot Dots Let's Master Grade 2 Math comes with 2 workbooks - Grade 2 Book 1 and Grade 2 Book 2. Book one starts with place value, odd/even numbers, time, etc. The end of book 2 includes data and statistics (age appropriate), money, and a few pages of "challenge" problems. There is reading involved for a number of word problems throughout both books. This Hot Dots kit also includes an interactive talking pen that light up - green for the correct answer, red for the wrong answer. The talking features include phrases like, "way to go", "nice try", "oops", "perfect" "that's brilliant", and more. A one touch button allows you to turn sound off, low, or high. The pen uses 2 AAA batteries which are not included. I have also found the Hot Dots pens are interchangeable, so if for whatever reason you don't have the pen from this kit, you can use an interactive Hot Dots pen from another kit. Hot Dots workbooks and Pens and are also great for travel. The books are slim enough to throw in a bag or backpack without taking any space.

    Kids love it!
My kids are 5 and 7. My 7yr old daughter is learning math in 1st grade and is having alot of fun with it. My 5 yr old is still learning the basics but still is engaged and enjoys the funny sounds it makes when he makes an error.

Great for continued learning outside of
Let's face it, 2nd grade was a long time ago for me and I can't exactly remember what I was learning. Having Hot Dots refresh my memory on what kinds of things my son will be learning helps me know what to work on with him in daily life as well as in the Hot Dots Math book, like money and measuring. Problems in the book build on each other, getting harder as you go further in the book. This is nice because my son can't just sit down and complete the whole book the first time. He has to work to master each section before he can move on the the next. I like that with the help of the talking pen he can either do it by himself at home or on the go or I can sit down and go through things with him. This is a great activity to keep him occupied while at the "boring store". Learning in a fun way is a great way to encourage continued learning outside of school. Hot Dots are great for kids!!

Great for 2nd Grade Math Practice
So I have to admit that getting the grade 2 Math box did not make my oldest as happy as the Preschooler who got the princess box. It is, after all, a school toy. No fooling her :). Inside a sturdy box was a Hot Dot pen and two spiral bound math books for Grade 2. You will need 2 AAA batteries for the pen; they aren't included. The books are sturdy for repeated use & feel like laminated cardstock. The books cover counting, place value, time, geometry, fractions, measurement, math facts, money, and algebra concepts. We have just begun second grade math and there were items that she had not yet covered but were in her math curriculum. I did like that there were vocabulary words we had not heard previously like expanded form. I also liked the challenge section at the end of book two which made the child think about using more than one step to solve problems. Because most of the books 100 problems are story problems, they should be a proficient reader. It's a great tool for assessing where a student is proficient or where they may need more practice. You do need to sit near because I the pen is not fully in the circle, it will not register properly. My 4 year old has an issue with this but my 6-3/4 year old only does when she's being sloppy or just wants to hear it talk and so picks every answer. If they need extra practice but drill & kill is making them nuts, this is a good alternative. Or if they like math & are adept at figuring things out on their own, try getting a set or two at a higher level and see what happens. Like the others, you can add any Hot Dot/Hot Dot Jr book or card set & the pen will work with them. I would highly recommend this Hot Dots set! Fun with Learning
My grandson asked for Educational Insights Hot Dots Let's Master 2nd grade math after using the reading book of the same. I like that it has many different kinds of math mixed in. He doesn't get bored. There are 100 lessons and the same awesome pen. He is good in math so the extra more difficult problems make him hungry to learn them. He spends about 30 minutes with the 2 books and pen. I received a sample in exchange for a honest and unbiased review.

    Good for Math Practice
I received this set for the purpose of this review. Regardless, all opinions are my own. My son is good at math, but he has not been doing well on his math tests. I was looking for a way for him to practice that would not feel like more homework. The Hot Dots Let's Master 2nd Grade Math set has been great. He loves the electronic pen that tells him if his answer is right or wrong. It uses sounds, music or words to give him the answers, but the sound can also be turned off, with just a red or green light telling him if he has the right answer or not. I appreciate this for traveling or when his siblings are trying to do their homework in the same room. Even though this is second grade level work, my two older girls are so intrigued by the talking pen that they have been known to "disappear" with the pen and the book for a little remedial practice of their own. Overall, I am pleased with this set as a way for my son to develop his skills at home and hopefully perform better on his math tests in the future.

    Great learning product
I received this product for my 2nd grade daughter to try out and review. I picked the math one because that's the subject she would benefit the most from the extra help. She was very excited when we received it. We put the batteries in the pen and started right up. The pen lights up red or green depending on if they get the answer correct. It also makes different sounds. She loves the cheering sound. She likes the dog shape of her sisters pen better than hers though. The set comes with two books of math problems. They are all word problems but my daughter has no problem reading them. Some she finds extremely funny which makes her want to do them even more. The two books cover a wide range of math problems. Addition, subtraction, time, length, geometry, algebra, money, data, fractions, challenges, etc... While this product is something that she can sit down and do herself it's a good product for the parent to work with the child. She hasn't gotten to telling time in school yet, so when she got to that point in the book I sat with her and explained about the different hands. I did have a problem with her just wanting to guess until she gets it right on some problems. Being that they are multiple choice. I talked to her about not guessing but coming to ask me to help her first. She does really enjoy the product and gets it out to do as soon as she gets home from school. I love that she's having fun and learning too. I would like more books to come out that we could add to it though. Once she does then all and learns everything in these two, it will not be a challenge anymore. My final thoughts on this product are great. My daughter loves it, and I can really see her learning from it with my help. I think it will help her get ahead a little in school especially if she keeps doing it. Also I didn't think about it until I read someone else's review, but this would be great for in the car. We received the product free from the company to try out but all the thoughts and review are mine and my daughters.
