Perfect for First Grader!
I ordered this for my First Grader and it was a great challenge! There were a couple of times that he needed my help to sound out a word or help with a phrase. There were some nights that he asks to practice this on his own, or I will ask him to do a book or a few pages as practice to keep him off his tablet. Its gotten to the point where he will just do a set right after school! Love that it is screen free and fun for him to do on his own.

    Reading Reinforcement
    My daughter is a first-grader and was so excited to receive this educational toy. She was able to use it independently right away. The first book contains activities pertaining to short vowels, long vowels, vowel digraphs, consonant blends, consonant digraphs, and special vowels. The second book contains more activities including special vowels, sentence sense, sight words, plurals, capital letters, punctuation, reading comprehension, and then several challenge pages. These skills correlate and reinforce what she has been taught in school already this year and the pages are great review. The Hot Dots pen is easy to use and tells the child whether the answer is correct or incorrect with a verbal response and/or a green or red light. This product would work well for centers or small groups in a classroom setting. I did feel that my daughter worked through most of the material pretty quickly and I am not sure how much she will use this after initially working on the pages. We received this toy from Educational Insights in exchange for this review; all opinions are my own.

    Great reading help
    My 7 year old grandson needs special help being interested in reading. This toy did the trick. Usually he will read 3 or 4 short pages, then loses interest. With this, he stays connected for about 30 minutes at a time. He really likes that the pen says different things, not just yes or no.

    Perfect for Struggling Readers
    My 6 year old was having some difficulties reading basic sight words. I tried many workbooks, and activity book but nothing seemed to help until we received Hot Dots Let's Master Reading Grade 1. This system contains a fun pen that requires two AAA batteries (not inc.). The pen works by positively reinforcing your child's answers. They have to answer certain questions in the lessons. Each question has an answer with a black dot. To answer, you child simply needs to hover over the right dot. Now, my daughter is reading at her grade level in just 3 months time thanks to this very interactive system. There are so many lessons too so it really helps keep kids entertained.

    Fun with Learning
    My grandson really enjoyed Hot Dot's Let's Master 1st Grade Reading. As with the math he liked going through the book with me sitting there although he could do most of it himself. He went through the books for about 25 minutes before even suggesting he wanted to be done. He liked that the pen would let him know rather he was right or wrong. I think this set is educational for learning and also as a confidence booster once they have read through a few times and know the answers.

    My 7 year old daughter loves this Hot Dot's program. I do wish I would have gotten her second grade because she is such a good reader and would love to have a more challenging one. I love how the Hot Dots Reader is interchangeable with the other ones. This is a fun educational tool that is great to practices many skills.

    Great Independent Learning Activity Set
    This Hot Dots set is geared towards children 6 and up. However, I think it would be a great gift for a child interested in reading at an earlier age. In fact, this could make a great "Welcome to Kindergarten" gift. This set includes both the Hot Dots Pen and two Reading and Language Arts books. (2 AAA batteries are not included but are easy to install.) My first grader received this as a gift and though he is already a strong reader, he still enjoys the included activity books - especially the second book. Book One covers short and long vowels, vowel digraphs, and consonant blends/digraphs. There are also a few vowel related review pages in Book One. Book Two moves onto special vowels, sentence sense, plurals, capital letters, punctuation, reading comprehension, and wraps up with a challenge section. Living in a busy household I appreciated that the Hot Dots pen had the option to totally mute the sounds. The child still knows whether or not s/he selected the correct answer by looking at the light on the pen. Red means try again and green means great job! The pen plays fun phrases and silly sound effects too. The parent can easily choose to hear speech, sound effects, or a mixture of both. This feature is nice for answer reinforcement. I also like that this set can be used by the child independently. I have a houseful of children, so it works out well to set my first grader up with this activity while I work with another one on homework, cook dinner, etc.

    Satisfied and would give ten stars
    I bought a few HOT DOTs products and we use them all almost daily. My youngest daughter is six and she has issues sitting and listening to the topic. Quickly gets boring. With HOT DOTs products, it changes completely. She sits, goes through activities and learns even not noticing the whole process. After repeating multiple times she just knows it. I like interactive stories and cards. Ages, specified on the box are really appropriate for that age :) I will be buying more. If you have one type of a pen, it will work on all HOT DOTs products. I thought it wouldn't :)
