Wonderful!
I got this for my daughter's 2nd birthday; now she's 2-1/2 and is really getting into it! She absolutely loves it and I think it is very age-appropriate. You will need basic computer knowledge to be able to set this up, so if you are computer-challenged you might need someone to help set it up. It comes with a USB cord and you will need to plug it into the computer and go to their website to download dialogues for up to 4 or 5 books at a time. After set up is complete, your toddler can touch the tag jr pal to ANY part of the book (including front or back cover, any picture, any word) and it will play music, say phrases, or read the words on the page. I like this feature because my daughter doesn't always understand that she has to touch the words; she can touch any part of the page and it will play something. I bought 5 books and there was enough room on the device to store the dialogues for all 5 books. When I get different books, I will have to connect it to the computer again and delete a book that she doesn't read anymore and replace it with a new one. It takes 2 AAA batteries and it's lasted for 9 months and still going strong. It's very durable too. My daughter has dropped it, thrown it, stepped on it etc and it still works with no problem.

Not enough memory
We asked Grandpa and Grandma for this gift and now I feel bad about it. The concept itself is fantastic and my 3y/o loves it! However people buy us more books to use with it, but if you notice, there's only 8MB of memory!!!What!?! We now own several of the "sets" and you can only do one set at a time--so when she wants to read from both sets, I can't let her! :( Then I have to connect the Leap Jr. to the computer, remove one set, add the other, etc, etc, etc. You get the picture--it ruins the novelty, the love of the books, and the toy itself--when a toddler doesn't know which books they can/can't read--well, it's not going to last long. It's too bad, because we really like the idea and it's so easy for her to use.

    Frustratingly low memory
The kids love this product, but it seems very poor design to include only 8MB of memory. I can buy an SD card that could easily hold all the books available on leap reader for a few dollars, but this product can only hold about 4-5 books at a time. So if your children like to read a large variety of books like mine do, you will spend more time on the computer loading and unloading books onto it than your kids will actually using the product. Unfortunately this is the case with next pen too. It also only holds a handful of books.

    LeapReader Junior is fun
I really like the product BUT it has one draw back. You can only have 3 books installed in the leapReader. If you want another book you have to remove one. I was disappointed with that because I ordered several books. That said I really like the product otherwise. I only purchased the LeapReader Junior because I love the LeapReader. Buty 3 year old grand daughter has trouble with the pen shape of the LeapReader. The LeapReader Junior isuch easier for her to handle. I would recommend it if it held more books in its memory.

Great toy but needs more memory
Bought as a Christmas gift for my 14 month old daughter. She enjoys making Violet talk by rolling her over the pages, which helps with her reading skills as she is already learning to follow along with the words on each page. I am very disappointed in the lack of memory on the device itself. Can only upload TWO books at a time. There are so many books available for it, having to hook it up to the computer and switch them out often seems like a hassle. Also, making it rechargeable would be awesome as I can see this model running thru batteries pretty quickly.

My kids love Tag Junior but Pal needs more memory.
This is our second Tag Junior so we obviously like them. The books are great and both my boys love them. My biggest disappointment has been the lack of memory space. I want to be able to load ALL our books. My boys like to mix it up and it is a pain to have to up load and delete books all the time. They are also chew threw batteries so longer battery life or a rechargeable version would be good.

    easy to use
I got this for my daughter for her 2nd birthday and she absolutely loves it! I only had to show her how to use it once and she had it down, and I was surprised how much that pen actually did! All you do is touch the elements on the pages and it starts talking (you don't have to follow along each word for it to read it). The only downsides I think were that 1. you have to program each book to the pen (not that big a deal though) 2. The pen only holds 5 or 6 books info (she got 10 for her birthday from family) 3. that it didn't come with the carrying case (but my aunt bought that for her). Overall, I give this an A++

    I should've gotten the Tag
I bought this for my 2 and a half year old son for Christmas. I'm not trying to say this is a bad product. I'm just saying that I tried to play it safe and get the Jr. because I thought the Tag might have been a little too advanced. My son isn't a genious, but he's pretty darn smart. I got him the Toy Story 3 package to see how he'd like it since he likes the movies. He likes the sounds it makes but that book focuses on counting. He knows how to count to 40 and can recognize the numbers. He likes Cars so I thought about getting him that but that one focuses on shapes. He knows his shapes already. He likes Sesame Street, but those focus on the alphabet, and Yes, he knows the alphabet. Get my drift? So, in hind sight, I should've gotten the Tag and let him "grow" into it like he has with his other reader he got last year and the Vtech ereader thing that his grandparents got him this year. Plus, I didn't see until after I bought it that it's not compatible with the Tag, but Tag is compatible with Tag Jr. So if I had bought the Tag and really saw it was too much for him, I could've then bought the Jr books without buying the Jr Pal. On another note, I did buy the Talking Word Factory DVD which is right up his alley since he knows the letters and the sounds they make. The DVD is all about connecting those 2 dots to make a word, which is more educational for him than the Tag Jr. Right now, I'm just watching his development and will decide what to get him for his 3rd birthday, Tag, Leapster, Leapster 2, who knows!

    Durable learning fun
I bought this for a 2 and a half year old boy along with the Cars, ToyStory, and Dora Tag Jr. books. This is his first Leapfrog toy. He quickly learned how to turn it off an on. He likes to stick his finger in the hole in the bottom where the "eye" is but this did not damage the toy. His favorite book is Cars, which is about shapes. He will grow into the other books soon and likes to explore with his Tag Jr. The carry case makes an excellent bag to keep all the books and toy in the same place. TIP: I downloaded all the books onto the Tag Jr. before giving them as a gift. This way, the toy is ready to go the moment it is in his/her hands.

    Pleasantly surprised!
I purchased the Tag Junior and a few of the books for my sons second birthday. He absolutely loves it! It's a great learning toy that says so many different things in each book, it's really astounding! He was able to learn how to use it after me showing him just once. It's a great toy to bring on the go or to restaurants to keep him occupied. I would definitely purchase again. The only downside I thought was the small selection of books available to go with the system, and the cost of each of them. I was also disappointed that the carrying case has to be purchased separately.
