Saves time, spreads evenly, easy to use
Our front yard and backyard are not smooth, which makes it impossible to to get a smooth, even application of weed killer onto our yard, until we bought this spreader. The handle is nice, and the wheels are secure. when I run it across on our choppy yard. I can put a lot of weed killer into the spreader, and easily eject it by pressing the lever on top. It has saved us so much time. I wish we had bought it sooner. It makes yard work a breeze and enjoyable to work outside!

    Drop spreader
Good spreader, better accuracy than a broadcast spreader.

    Clogged immediately using Scott product.
Clogged immediately - only I didn't realize that was what had happened till half an acre later.... I bought this drop spreader instead of a broadcast spreader in anticipation of future use. Used it to spread Scots brand weed and feed on approximately 2.5 acres (at least that was the plan). Right wheel stopped turning immediately, first day of application. I stupidly did not take in the physics involved in the workings of the spreader. I put half a 40lb bag of weed and feed in the hopper. Copy says it will hold the entire bag. I happy (thought) spred it over half the lawn I need to cover. Was suspicious not only of the right wheel not turning, but of how little product seemed to be being distributed on my lawn.... As I usually do (to my detriment), I trusted the product above what I sensed I was seeing.... I waited for a rain day. As soon as it passed I jumped out to finish application with second half of bag. More suspicious than I was days ago... Long story short, time to weed and feed has come to and end. drop spreader was distributing NOTHING. I ended up casting weed and feed from my hand like feeding chickens on the farm... because the time for weed and feed is at its end. I'm talking at least half an acre I threw weed and feed by hand.... SO. this review has zero to do with a box. Seriously people, go to Lowes. It doesn't come in a box... This review has to deal with respecting. calibrating, loading, and using this tool per its instructions, and discovering it not only stole my money it wasted several days of my life I will never regain.

Grass seed makes spreader difficult to move
I have a Scotts rotary spreader, but I bought this DROP spreder to specifically use along plant beds to overseed with grass seed. Past overseedings allowed too much seed to land in plant beds when using ROTARY spreader, requiring lots of vegetation killer the following spring. I had to apply some insect granuels several weeks before overseeding, so I tried out the Scotts DROP spreader. Everything seemed to work fine. When it came time to apply grass seed, the grass seed made the orange drum with fingers at bottom of hopper impossible to push the DROP spreader. The wheels refused to rotate. I had to remove seed several times until the orange drum was partially visable. Once I got moving, the spreader worked OK. Unfortuanetely, I had to keep stoping to add more seed. Good thing I didn't have to use this DROP spreader on my entire 1 1/4 acre lot. Not sure if Scotts designed drum to have as many little fingers on drum as they have for grass seed, but it doesn't work well with grass seed. I have not tried any granular fertilizers, but the insect killer worked fine. Since I may not overseed for another YEAR, I might start trimming some of the fingers on drum to see if spreading seed improves. I would think you would only need about 1/4 of the fingers. It's called a DROP spreader, so the fingers aren't forcing the material through the bottom openings.

    Works great
Bought this to replace my previous accurate 1000 which served me while over the years. I put down fertilizer and seed already and very happy with its performance. I used the bag rate, which assuming was the same for all scott's drop spreaders. Was I correct?

    Great lawn product spreader.
This is a great spreader. This is the second one I've owned after giving my first one to a friend. It comes fully assembled, just have to pull up the handle and turn the knob to tighten the screw. It holds plenty of lawn products,. I can put a whole bag for a 5,000 square foot lawn in it at once and don't have to refill to do my entire lawn. I'm not a fan of the whirly spreaders, can never figure out how far away I need to be to do the next row. The last one I had lasted me 10 years and is still going strong with my friend. Hoping this lasts me as long!

Hard to push over thick lawns
The plastic wheels are extremely hard to maneuver over thick lawns, such as St Augustine; otherwise, it seems to do what it was made for. Another reason for low stars is my item appeared to have been used and returned. It was scratched up in several places. I had several photos but could only upload 2.

I ordered this spreader for the purpose of spreading peat moss on my lawn. I had been told by a customer service employee at Scotts that this was the only Scotts spreader that would handle peat moss. It does not work on peat moss. I tried everything I could think of and nothing helped. I am sure that this spreader works well for fertilizer and other similar materials. Its easy to operate and has a large bin for materials.
