Is a $20 worth it?...YES
I know everyone is going to have different experiences. That's a given. But I think one's expectations of a $20 should be somewhat limited, but despite this, I've been SHOCKED by how good this little rod is. So much so, that this is my FIRST review, ever, of an item I've purchased at Walmart. I pair this with a 500 series Shimano Sienna ($30 at Walmart) and 2 lb Berkley Trilene Sensation line. Beautiful little creek/pond kit. It's sensitive enough to pull 3-inch sunfish out of streams, but stout enough to handle crappie at around 1.5 lbs. In 5 outings I've landed no less than 50 fish on this rig and the ones I didn't get in were due to hook penetration or technique, not because of the rod. Guides are solid as well. There's little to gripe about from a setup that's less than HALF of what a decent ultralight rod alone can cost. I might get the 7' just for fun. Pair it with some Bobby Garland Itty Slab Slayers and you're in for a fun time. PROS: • Super light weight (I got the 5' UL) • SURPRISINGLY sensitive (from rock bumps to bites, it's VERY good, esp. for the price) • Durable enough to pull 1.5 lb fish CONS: • The cork isn't super high quality, but MORE than sufficient for this class of rod • It's a 2-piece, and twice I had the top half come loose while trying to whip out 1/64th oz lures. Easy fix - put a small piece of electrical tap on HALF of the lower rod. Snug fit, no issues now. • Reel seat shouldn't be over tightened.

On second thought, nah.
I bought the 5' ultralight, thinking that it was a one-piece rod. I thought this because the 5'6" version is listed as 2pc in the title. Silly me, thinking there'd be continuity there. Nowhere in the description did it say the 5' ultralight was 2 pieces, so I thought I was safe. Nope. Also, the shipment was delayed about 2 weeks. Not getting anything from this particular seller again.

    Incredible strength
I picked up the micro series 7' light action for pan fishing out of my canoe. I put a pfluger president 20x reel on it with power pro 10lb braid. I figured this would take care of the occasional bass that hits the lure. I was out getting perch with a small red devil spoon when all the sudden a huge splash and a huge fin come jumping out of the water. I had a 30+lb Chinook salmon grab my spoon and bend the rod right to the water. Game on! I was sure this tiny pole was toast. I kept fighting until I had it to my canoe and it kept swimming under the boat and bending the pole around the bottom of my boat. I finally grabbed it and released it. 20min of, this pole should break any minute. It held up with not a scratch. I am forever sold on the strength and quality of Shakespeare rods. My rod holder is now filled with Shakespeare rods of every size and power. Thanks for the memories.

This was purchased for my son who's starting to do some trout streams fishing and he enjoyed the micro fishing poles and using the 2 lbs line challenge

    Really great rods. Very impressed.
I bought 2 of the ultra-light 7 Foot rods. They are great for crappie fishing or any pan fishing. The only thing cheap about these rods or the price. I have some fairly expensive rods and these are just as nice. Highly recommend. Is my recent catch while fishing for crapping on my 7 ft ultralight Shakespeare rod.

UL vs L is huge difference
Used the 7' UL and it was an incredibly effective noodle. With a 2000 reel w/10# braid and fluoro leader... excellent landing ratio. Landed big bass, crappie, catfish to 12 pounds... mostly crappie though... eventually broke it lifting 14" crappie into my boat. It was a 2 year old rod and out of warranty. Bought another and also got a 7' Light to try. The Light was much heavier in action but I like this one too. Will use both. Price is awesome and cork is good quality. Worth it.

    Good job! Great fishing rod!
My new 7' Light action fishing rod arrived in good condition and was shipped quick. I ordered this rod for fall Walleye fishing from shore. The fish are shallow now, 3-5' and most folks have put their boats away for the winter. This rod loads well for casting light weight stick baits and casts very easily. This is very relaxing fishing at it's best. The 7' length is great to reach past shoreline rocks and obstacles. Also, the wrap just above the handle is approximately 15' from the butt, convenient for measuring a legal walleye here, the next wrap is about 21' and the first eyelet is 30". Very handy indeed. I am very please overall with this fishing rod and the price can't be beat! I will definitely want the 7' UL for bluegill fishing next summer. I've included a photo of a nice fat 23" Walleye recently taken with this rod. Thanks so much for your good work and efforts and Good luck to you.

    WOW!My 7 Y/O Daughter Caught an 18 inch Rainbow
Incredible little fishing rod. I was a little skeptical at first because it didn't come with a real. This is the first fishing pole I have ever purchased that did not have a real on it. So I bought a Shakespeare Contender 20. A nice little real that looks like it was made just for this little rod. The very first day out I put on a small little hook and one green power egg for my Daughter Gracie. Within 4 minutes she had a huge 18.5 inch Rainbow Trout hooked up. She cranked and cranked and finally landed this beautiful big trout. She actually caught her limit of 5 fish that day and she is hounded me relentlessly to take her out again. So not only is this a superb fishing pole, it actually brings Daddy's and Daughters together. Shakespeare isn't just about selling fishing gear... They are also about family, and bringing family together. Now that's the kind of company I am happy to spend my dollars with! Keep up the great work Shakespeare! Looks like you have a brand new customer for life. Her name is Gracie Joy, she is 7 years old, and she just loves your fishing pole and reel. -Jason (40 y/o in Cornelius, Oregon)
