Great book
People need to stop coddling their kids. It's real life and this is what happens. People break up and this story helps kids realize they aren't alone.

Not "family friendly"
The description states its a story for the whole family... nope. It's not "family friendly" when the writer is breaking up the family. I just bought it to read to my kids before bed and 6 pages in the parents are fighting (kid thinks theres a burglar and a lamp is broken) and they divorce. A few pages later mom starts going out and then is bringing a "friend" home. Another character's parents split in between there. I read 10 pages and I'm done. It might've been a great family friendly story otherwise, however normalizing broken homes and worrying my kids with a divorce for a bedtime story is not happening here. Not appropriate for 8 years old as it states.

Not for young kids - read it yourself first!!
So I read this whole book to my 5 yr old. Wish I'd read it alone first, but once it started, I had to finish it to give closure. The beginning is SO bad - another reviewer had a point about worrying kids with things like divorce. It really rubbed me the wrong way reading this to my daughter as married mom of 2 who sometimes gets into arguments with their father. I had to reassure her as I was reading, that this is not something she has to worry about in real-life. And the characters aren't nice to each other. The Land of the Lost was also very scary for her, and she asked lots of questions about The Loser that I couldn't answer other than to speculate and make guesses. I expected better from J.K. Rowling. That said, I have to give it props for being VERY interesting and unique. I enjoyed it myself, but it really worried my poor daughter at times and may have even caused some nightmares.

    Scary and Sad! Also Stupid.
I don't know who this book is for. It's way too scary and sad for young kids under 8 and too stupid and simple for kids over 8.
